Smith and Wesson produced the Military & Police model starting in 1899.  Designed to fire the .38 S&W Special Cartridge. It has been in continued production since it was introduced. This revolver is a .38 S&W Special, Military & Police Pre-Model 10, Five Screw Variation. This series was produced 1948 to 1968 serial numbers C1-C1,000,000. When Smith & Wesson assigned model numbers to their revolvers in 1958, this .38 M&P became known as the Model 10.

This revolver was shipped from the Smith & Wesson factory on December 22, 1953 and delivered to the Boston Police Department, Boston Ballistics, Boston, MA.

This revolver is marked on the backstrap BPD 224 M and was carried by Officer Harold Murphy from 1960-1985. The grips are original and number to the gun, they show 25 years of daily use.
