Smith and Wesson produced the Military & Police model starting in 1899.  Designed to fire the .38 S&W Special Cartridge. It has been in continued production since it was introduced. This revolver is a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 Fourth Change. This modification occurred in 1915 and continued till 1942 with a production of 758,297 revolvers.

This revolver was shipped from the Smith and Wesson factory to the Boston Police Dept. on February 7, 1940.

There were 32 revolvers in the shipment and the back straps were stamped "BPD M" with the number 32-63. The cost $20.50 each.
