Smith and Wesson produced the Military & Police model starting in 1899.  Designed to fire the .38 S&W Special Cartridge. It has been in continued production since it was introduced.

This .38 Military & Police Model 10-5, caliber .38 S&W Special, revolver shows in company records, which indicate that this handgun, with was shipped from the S&W factory on July 14, 1967 and delivered to the Boston Police Department, Boston MA. The records indicate that this revolver was shipped with a 4 inch heavy barrel, blue finish and checkered walnut square butt grips. It was factory marked with the Boston Police Property marking BPD 1232-M

This particular gun had the 4 inch barrel changed, most likely by the armorers at BPD to a 2 inch barrel.
